Once Upon A Time 1x12 "Skin Deep" Spoilers!

Growing up in Australia in the 1980s, young Emilie de Ravin's interests veered towards darker offerings than the wide-eyed wonders of Disney animation. "I was a child who watched Hitchcock and murder-mystery documentaries," reveals the actress, best known for playing Lost's Claire. But as soon as she wrapped her scenes as the book-loving Belle for this week's episode of Once Upon a Time, the actress wasted no time slipping in a DVD of the Disney classic "Beauty and the Beast." "It's very beautiful," she says of the 1991 film just released in 3D. "Belle's gorgeous gold and blue outfits as well as the shiny dark hair were definitely influences for [Once's] costume and hair departments. They made me a beautiful wig." Joining Belle in her adventure, as in the film, are father Maurice, the brutish Gaston and, of course, the Beast, whose identity is being kept tightly under wraps. "Although I have a really fun scene with the Evil Queen, most of my scenes are with the Beast," reports the real-life beauty, now 30. "It's all very sweet. There's a lot of trepidation as to how he's going to act around her, but after a few days, he starts becoming bemused at how relaxed she becomes." True to the tale as old as time, de Ravin says Belle "starts to bring out some joy in him he hasn't experienced. Even something small, like being touched on the arm, is huge for him." Why so secretive about the Beast's origins? "Remember how on Lost we couldn't talk about anything?" de Ravin recalls. "Well, there's a few of those this time, too."
